8 Things to Do When Your Loved One has a Gambling Problem

Most people think that only illegal drugs, such as opiates, narcotics and amphetamines or alcohol can be addicting. This is the reason why there are many high-stakes rollers who cannot or do not admit to having a gambling problem—even if their nightly jaunts to the casino are starting to ruin their work or their marriage. One should not be ashamed or embarrassed to admit that he has a gambling addiction. After all, this is the first vital step to recovery.

You know if your loved one has taken his love for poker or Blackjack too far if you notice that he’s been borrowing money just to gamble, or if he has started to pawn his watches or jewelry just to get his kicks in the casino. Although this can be a very troubling problem, there are many things that you can do to help. Below are 8 of the essential steps to take if you think your loved one has a gambling addiction.

1. Tell the person carefully that you believe he has a serious problem. Sometimes, it takes somebody else’s point of view to make a person realize that he has a gambling addiction. Some people might be too scared to confront a gambling addict, but doing so is for his own good.

2. Don’t forget to tell the person that you care for him. This is the reason why you want to talk to him about his problem in the first place. Tell him that you don’t like seeing him put his life to waste because you care about what happens to him.

3. Talk to his immediate family. If he or she isn’t your spouse, your child or your parent, considers talking to the person’s immediate family first. He might listen to them more and even find it easier to open up about his gambling problem.

4. Listen to the person and try to understand where he or she is coming from. There may be many underlying reasons why he developed a gambling problem. To be able to help solve his gambling addiction, you have to understand what led him there.

5. Let the person know that you are willing to help. Encourage your loved one to face his gambling addiction with courage and strength by telling him that you will stand by him on his way to recovery. The burden of his addiction then seems much easier to bear.

6. Search for gambling anonymous groups or therapy to help him recover. As with all addicts, a person who has developed a gambling problem will need the support of psychologists, therapists and even spiritual advisors if he wants to beat his addiction. There are many gambling anonymous sites online that you can refer to.

7. Be there with him all the way to recovery. It may take months (or even years) for your loved one to recover from his addiction. But the road to success is always smoother and easier to traverse with friends and family by his side. Make sure that you’re there for him and show your love, support and care.

8. Let your loved one know that you believe in him. Never say depreciating things to him, especially if he’s on the road to recovery. He might slide back into his old ways. It’s best to show him that you trust that he will be able to beat his gambling addiction.

An addiction is always serious, even if it doesn’t involve drugs. Help your loved one beat his gambling problem by following the eight steps listed above. These are some of the best things you can do to help pave his road to recovery.

Gambling Problem?

March 16th, 2011 admin 4 comments

Question by jzimmerman56301: Gambling Problem?

I have a huge gambling problem. I’m 25 now, it started around the time i was 20. For a while i just wouldn’t go.. Until last year I won 3000 dollars at a casino. Ever since then ive gone about every two weeks around the time of my paycheck.. Sometimes I even skip paying bills, I hate doing it and it’s getting out of control. It consumes my thoughts when I sit at home or even at work. I’ve even resulted to taking the insurance off my car, that seems to help somewhat because I won’t drive without insurance but I can’t live without transportation to see my kids, what should i do?

I Think I Have a Gambling Problem, What Should I Do?

I Think I Have a Gambling Problem, What Should I Do?

Some people have quipped that the only problem gamblers have is losing.  Would that it was that simple.  Solving problem gambling involves a lot more than just finding a winning system or having a lucky streak, because a gambling problem is a deep seated situation that involves a lot more than just losing a game or money.  Addictive gambling can rob you of everything you care about or hold dear and it isn’t about winning and losing, it is about gambling and action.

Like a lot of decisions in life, the decision to try to get help for problem gambling is often difficult to make because it is hard to see things clearly.  You may wonder, “Do I really have a problem with gambling?  Would everything really be okay if I could just start winning?  Can I hit a lucky streak to pull myself out of this and then stop?”

Those are all questions that face many people who have started the long slide backwards into the terrible experience of compulsive gambling.  Gamblers, like other addicts, are great at rationalizing and talking themselves into things, even though they know deep down inside, that those rationalizations are just lies.  For instance, let’s compare the gambling problem to a drinking problem.  A gambler may think, “If I could just hit a lucky streak and win more I’d quit gambling for good.”  Then he or she goes out and gambles more, a lot more, after all, the lie that he or she will stop is allowing him or her to gamble with a clear conscience, for a while anyway.

Alcoholics often tell themselves a similar lie.  “I’ll go out and have a good time and drink all I want and get it out of my system, then I’ll stop.”  Then the drinker goes out and ties on a good one.  But after the effects wear off, he or she is right back at it again.  The same is true of the gambler who says he or she will stop after a big win or lucky streak.  Even if he or she does manage to win, the gambling doesn’t stop, in fact, it usually gets worse.  Obviously, the cure for a drinking problem isn’t more drinking and the cure for compulsive gambling isn’t more gambling.

Gambling causes other problems in the lives of addicted gamblers, such as relationship problems, money problems, career problems, and finally, health problems.  In fact, as the disease progresses, it has an effect on every part of the gambler’s life.  Are other parts of your life being affected by your gambling?  That is usually the acid test to decide if it is time to act.  If you are asking if you have a problem, then you almost certainly do.

So the next step is an easy one, believe it or not.  All you have to do is to get information.  You have learned about other things in life, now it is time to learn how to stop gambling and get your life back under control.  Where do you get such information?  From other gamblers, of course.  What I recommend is that you call GA, Gamblers Anonymous, and briefly explain the situation.  If you call and say, “I think I have a gambling problem,” they will help you.  In fact, from that point forward, you will be getting help from experts and it is fee of charge.  Just say those words then listen.  That’s not so hard, is it?

Wil has created MP3’s that are specially engineered to help people to stop gambling and relax using simple proven techniques. He is the founder of Eastern Maine Hypnotherapy and has worked with hundreds of people on a variety of behavioral problems such as gambling addiction and problem gambling. Gambling problems arises when one tends to crave for more money by excessive gambling. Gambling when overdone leads to bankruptcy and dysfunction of relationships with your loved ones.

Gambling is very addictive and hence unless you are determined to risk it, you might end up in misery. Winning and losing is a part of gambling and it all depends on how much the individual is mentally stable to take the defeats in gambling.

Acknowledging the game of gambling is the first step to solve gambling problems. Gamblers Anonymous has posted the following questions to test you.

1. Did you ever avoid school or work for gambling?

2. Has gambling made your life at home unhappy?

3. Has your reputation been affected by gambling?

4. Has your life been remorse after a game of gambling?

5. Did you choose to gamble and pay your debts?

6. Has gambling brought your ambition and aspirations down?

7. Did you ever wanted to win back all the money you had lost in gambling?

8. Did you have the urge to win more after you tasted some success?

9. Have you ever gambled and emptied your pocket?

10. Did you borrow money and gambled any day?

18. Does disappointment or argument spur you on to gamble more?

19. Did you want to celebrate success for a few hours after gambling?

20. Have you ever attempted suicide after failure?

A person having gambling problems would say a “yes” to at least seven questions posted above.

These tips given below should help you out off gambling problems, if any:

1. It is advisable to take just the money needed to gamble than taking credit cards and ATM cards along.
2. Do not gamble for a long time.
3. There are always more chances of losing than winning in a game of gambling.
4. Make sure you don’t use the money you won again.
5. When you do not have any more money to gamble, drop the idea without borrowing.
6. Take help of people who are not addicted to the game and seek proper advice.
